CALCULATION METHOD

How much insulation do I need?

Calculate the gross wall, ceiling, floor, or attic area and subtract openings or sections that will not receive insulation. Add a fitting allowance, then divide by the coverage printed on the package or blowing chart.

Net area = gross area − excluded openings

Order area = net area × (1 + waste allowance)

Packages or bags = order area ÷ label coverage, rounded up

Rigid boards = order area ÷ board face area, rounded up

1,000 sq ft insulation example

A 1,000 sq ft attic with a 10% allowance has an order area of 1,100 sq ft. A batt package covering 40 sq ft requires 28 packages. If a blown-in product label instead allows 59.9 sq ft per bag at the selected R-value, the same order area requires 19 bags.

R-value and coverage are not interchangeable

R-value measures resistance to heat flow. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that appropriate R-values depend on climate zone and building component. Product type and thickness affect R-value, so this calculator records the target but does not invent a universal thickness conversion.

Blown-in insulation bag calculator

For loose-fill products, use the exact row on the manufacturer’s coverage chart for your target R-value and application. Owens Corning’s published chart, for example, changes maximum square feet per bag at every R-value. Installing fewer than the required bags or less than the minimum thickness can produce a lower R-value.

Batts, rolls, and rigid boards

Batt and roll packages list total square-foot coverage for a specified width, thickness, and R-value. Rigid boards are counted from their face area, but field cuts, staggered seams, multiple layers, and framing layout can increase material use. Enter the package data for the exact product you plan to buy.

Should windows and doors be subtracted?

Subtract large openings when estimating wall-cavity coverage. Small cavities, headers, rim areas, blocking, and trimming can consume some of the apparent savings, so retain an allowance appropriate to the layout and installer’s method.

How do I calculate insulation square footage?

Multiply length by width for each surface, add identical areas, and subtract openings. Apply a fitting allowance before dividing by package coverage.

How many bags of blown-in insulation do I need?

Divide the order area by maximum coverage per bag on the product chart for the required R-value and round up. Also meet the label’s minimum thickness and minimum bag count.

What R-value do I need?

It depends on climate zone, building component, existing insulation, and applicable energy code. Use project documents and current local requirements; DOE guidance is a useful starting reference.

How much extra insulation should I buy?

The page starts at 10% for fitting and cutting, but regular framing bays may need a different allowance than boards with many cuts. Adjust it for the product and layout.

Does this calculator account for wall studs?

It estimates insulation covering the entered surface area. It does not subtract framing automatically because cavity fill and continuous insulation use different assemblies.
