CALCULATION METHOD
How many sheets of drywall do I need?
Find the surface area to cover, subtract large openings, add a waste allowance, then divide by the coverage of one panel. The final sheet count is rounded up to a whole panel.
Wall area = 2 × (room length + room width) × wall height
Ceiling area = room length × room width
Net area = selected surfaces − openings
Sheets = net area × (1 + waste) ÷ panel area, rounded up
12 × 10 room example
A 12 ft × 10 ft room with 8 ft walls has 352 sq ft of wall area and a 120 sq ft ceiling. After subtracting 36 sq ft of doors and windows, the net area is 436 sq ft. With 10% waste, that requires 15 standard 4 × 8 ft sheets.
Drywall accessory coverage
The accessory estimate scales the waste-adjusted board area using USG’s installation-guide planning figures. These figures are useful for purchasing, but finishing style and installation details can change actual use.

Common drywall sheet sizes
A 4 × 8 ft sheet covers 32 sq ft, a 4 × 10 covers 40 sq ft, and a 4 × 12 covers 48 sq ft. Larger panels can reduce seams when the room and handling conditions allow, but sheet count alone does not determine the best layout.
Should doors and windows be subtracted?
Subtract large openings when you want a tighter material estimate. For small openings, many installers leave them in the area calculation so the waste allowance covers offcuts and layout losses.
