CALCULATION METHOD
How much sand do I need?
Multiply the project area by the sand depth to get volume, add the selected allowance, then multiply by bulk density to estimate weight. The calculator keeps volume and weight visible because suppliers may quote sand by cubic yard or by ton.
Rectangle area = length × width
Circle area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)²
Order volume = area × depth × (1 + allowance)
Weight = order volume × bulk density
Bags = order weight ÷ bag weight, rounded up
Sand calculator example
A 12 × 10 ft area is 120 sq ft. At 2 inches deep it needs 20 cu ft before allowance. Adding 10% gives 22 cu ft or 0.81 cu yd. At the editable 100 lb/cu ft planning density, that is 2,200 lb, 1.10 US tons, or 44 fifty-pound bags.
Sand weight and density
Sand weight is not fixed. Product grading, particle shape, compaction, and especially moisture change bulk density. Use the product data or supplier quote for purchasing and load planning; the default is only a starting point.
Sand tonnage calculator
The tonnage result uses the full order volume after allowance. In US mode, one US ton is 2,000 lb. In metric mode, results use kilograms and metric tonnes while preserving the same physical estimate.
Sand bag calculator
Enter the printed bag weight rather than assuming every product is 50 lb. Whole bags are rounded up. Manufacturer yield is more precise when available because bag weight alone cannot capture product-specific density.
Sand cost calculator
Bulk cost uses calculated weight and the entered price per ton. Bagged cost uses whole bags. Delivery, minimum quantities, taxes, pallet pricing, and leftover material are excluded, so compare both results with a local quote.
