CALCULATION METHOD
How much mulch do I need?
Multiply bed area by mulch depth to get cubic volume. Convert cubic feet to cubic yards for bulk orders, add the selected spreading allowance, then divide by the printed bag volume for bagged mulch.
Rectangle area = length × width
Circle area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)²
Cubic feet = area × depth in feet
Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27
Bags = order cubic feet ÷ bag volume, rounded up
Mulch calculator example
A 20 × 10 ft bed is 200 sq ft. At 3 inches deep, it needs 50 cu ft or 1.85 cu yd before allowance. Adding 10% gives 55 cu ft, approximately 2.04 cu yd or 28 two-cubic-foot bags.
How deep should mulch be?
A common landscape-bed range is 2–4 inches, but plant, soil, slope, mulch type, existing layer, and maintenance goals matter. Measure the depth still present before topping up an established bed.

Bulk versus bagged mulch cost
The two cost results use the same project volume but different purchasing methods. Delivery, pallet discounts, taxes, minimum orders, and unused material are excluded, so compare them with a local quote.
