CALCULATION METHOD
How much decking do I need?
Calculate deck area, divide it by the face area of one stock board, add a cutting allowance, and round up. The calculator also uses board width plus the selected gap to estimate installed rows for face-fastener counting.
Deck area = length × width
Board coverage = actual board width × stock length
Boards to buy = deck area ÷ board coverage × (1 + waste), rounded up
Joists = deck length ÷ on-center spacing, rounded up + 1
Face screws = installed rows × joists × 2 + allowance
16 × 12 deck calculator example
A 16 × 12 ft deck covers 192 sq ft. A 5.5 in × 16 ft board covers about 7.33 sq ft, so the surface requires about 26.2 boards before cuts. Adding 10% and rounding up gives 29 boards. Joists spaced 16 in on center across the 16 ft length produce 13 joist lines.
Deck board and composite decking calculator
The area method works for wood, composite, and PVC boards when actual face width and stock length are entered. It does not create a seam pattern. If stock boards are shorter than the deck, plan joints, blocking, breaker boards, picture framing, and usable offcuts before ordering.
Deck joist and framing calculator
The calculator counts joist lines from the selected spacing and totals joist, rim, ledger, and built-up beam length. It does not select lumber size or approve a span. Species, grade, joist size, loads, wet-service conditions, cantilevers, beam arrangement, and code all affect allowable spans.
Deck screw calculator
For face-screwed boards, the estimate uses two fasteners where each installed board row crosses each joist and adds the same allowance selected for decking. Hidden-fastener systems should instead be calculated from their current package coverage and manufacturer instructions.
What the deck cost includes
The optional cost combines deck boards, framing lumber by linear length, the plan-specified support posts, and screw boxes. It excludes concrete footings, hardware, connectors, flashing, railing, stairs, fascia, delivery, tax, tools, permits, demolition, and labor.
